BS EN 13120:2009+A1:2014

For some time now we have been writing news articles about cord safety, the most recent one of which indicated that the new Regulations wouldn’t be published until the end of March, but that was wrong.

As of 28th February 2014, the Child Safety Regulations finally became enshrined in Law by becoming published as British Standards.

  • BS EN 13120:2009+A1:2014 – Performance requirements including safety
  • BS EN 16433:2014 – Protection from strangulation hazards – Test methods
  • BS EN 16434:2014 – Protection from strangulation hazards – Test methods for safety devices

These Regulations set the benchmark for establishing the minimum acceptable standard for the safe design, manufacture and installation of internal blinds, as required by the General Product Safety Regulations 2005, but the complete lack of news or fanfare is quite disappointing. Not only that, but the date for publication was incorrectly commented on by the BSI itself.

This is the biggest shake up in the Blinds Industry for many decades and, aside from the BBSA, there have been no efforts at communication or raising awareness with blindmakers, so we can only imagine that there are hundreds of people working in the industry who have absolutely no idea of these changes.

Worse still, the publication was not even used as a marketing opportunity to raise public awareness.
