Which Shaped Window Blinds?

Shaped windows can present a problem for blinds, but here at Conservatory Blinds Limited we have the technical expertise to advise you correctly, as well as provide shaped blinds solutions that you just won’t find anywhere else.

Whilst we have developed a completely unique solution for fully-retractable gable blinds, this news article is specifically about shaped windows with sloping sills (the opposite shape to a gable) where the top of the window is level and flat.

You normally won’t find this shape in any conservatory (except in the roof) so it can often present a problem. It is more commonly found in a dormer window that projects out with a flat roof, leaving triangular sides, but it can be found in other areas too.

So, what blinds can fit this shape of window? Well, it all depends on the extent of the angle and the size of the blinds… obviously any blind can be made to fit that shape, but it won’t be operational. In simple terms, the more acute the angle - the fewer options are available.

Pleated Blinds: If there is a considerable rectangular area and you have an angle less than 25 degrees from the horizontal, then freehanging pleated blinds are an ideal solution (as pictured above) because they can be completely retracted. Alternatively, we have a window blind that can be operated within a tight triangle, but this requires cords over the glass.

Vertical Blinds: If the area is very wide with a slope of between 10-45 degrees, with the shortest side at least 200mm tall (8”) - then vertical blinds are best suited, because they too can be completely retracted.

Shaped vertical blinds can only be achieved using the Hunter Douglas Eos vertical blind system (white headrail only).

However, if none of these options are possible, then you are left with the following options:

Fixed (Non-Operational) Blinds: Both Pleated Blinds and Pinoleum blinds can be manufactured to neatly fit any shape whatsoever if there is no need for them to be operational.

Tilt-Only Venetian Blinds: Venetian Blinds (wood or aluminium) where the slats can be tilted but the blind cannot be raised or lowered (referred to as Tilt-Only).

Roof Blinds: Because roof blinds are designed to easily cope with this kind of shape, it may be tempting to specify a shaped roof blind within a similar shaped window – but beware. Roof blinds have fixed wires running across the glass and are designed to work when gravity is acting downwards on the back of the blind. They are not designed to work well when stood upright, or on their sides.

Finally, failing all of the above; consider the option of having a rectangular shaped window blind that is surface-fitted so that it hangs down over the wall area.
