Consultation to Change EU Safety Law

Further to our news article dated Monday 18th June 2012, about Child Safety Week, we thought it would be timely to report that changes are being planned to EN13120 for improved safety.

The EU Standard relating to cord safety has been reviewed and a working group formed between the European Window Blind Trade Associations (including the BBSA) as well as major manufacturers and consumer safety representatives.

As a result, the working group has produced a set of draft proposal documents for consultation:

 
Proposal for EN 13120: 2009
Proposed revisions to the child safety elements of this standard
 
Proposal for EN 16433
A proposed test method standard for Internal Blinds – Protection from Strangulation
 
Proposal for EN 16434
Proposed requirements/test standards for safety devices – Protection from Strangulation
 
After the period of consultation there may well be the need to amend the standards even further. After acceptance of these changes there is a formal ratification process and the current view is that these documents will not be published until spring 2013 at the earliest.
 
When published, these changes will become law.
 
The BBSA continues to be at the very forefront of this consultation, keeping members up to date with the process and acting as a conduit for further feedback and consultation. If you are considering buying blinds, always ensure that you only deal with a Member of the British Blind & Shutter Association.
