No wonder salespeople have such a bad reputation

03 February 2012

Yet another case of outright slander raised its head yesterday from a self-employed saleswoman working for one of our more desperate “competitors” after a customer had told her that she had ordered her blinds from us and not her.

When the customer told the saleswoman that she had ordered blinds from us, despite our quotation being considerably higher, the saleswoman made completely false and groundless accusations that our blinds would cause the customer's windows to leak.

Obviously this is not only completely untrue, but is also utterly ridiculous. Anyone with even the slightest common sense would realise that this is an absurd lie, if for no other reason that we would not still be in business...

This is far from the first time that we have had to endure such appalling slander from salespeople representing this company, so this time we are taking action to ensure that this never happens again.

It is utterly reprehensible that a company would stoop so low as to encourage such slanderous deception, and is clear proof that they must be desperate.

Of course the company that she represents disowns such behaviour – blaming it solely on the self-employed agents (you have probably seen similar behaviour on Watchdog and other consumer programmes). This leaves us to decide whether to take legal action against the individual (which doesn't deal with the company that started the slander) or risk court action against the company on the basis of vicarious liability (which as they know is a long and expensive process).

We can only point out the obvious:

  • Unless someone is willing to confirm what they say in writing, you simply have to assume that they are lying
  • If someone makes claims about another company, how would they actually know whether this is true?
  • If the allegations were true, is there any evidence and do they make sense, or are they so preposterous that they beggar belief?
  • Perhaps you should question whether anyone who resorts to slandering their competition should be trusted at all…
