Tragic Death Due to Improper Blind Cord Safety

20 January 2012 Blinds & Shutters Industry

The end of last year saw the sad news of the death of a young child as the result of a blind cord. The child has become entangled in a vertical blind and was left brain damaged in August, and sadly passed away at the end of 2011.

At Conservatory Blinds Limited we take blind cord safety very seriously, and as members of the British Blind and Shutter Association we support the “Make It Safe” campaign. What this means is that we always supply safety devices with our looped blinds cords and will offer different blinds if you believe that your children may be vulnerable. We have also been fitting warning labels to our looped blind cords for many years. Our conservatory blinds experts are always happy to answer any question you have on blind cord safety, and even retro-fit safety devices to existing blinds if you think they may be a danger.

The BBSA’s guidelines on blind cord safety, as shown on their Make it Safe leaflet, are:

  • Make sure all cords and chains are secured out of reach
  • Do not place your child’s cot, bed, highchair or playpen near to a window blind.
  • Do not put sofas, shelves or bookcases near to a window blind, as children love to climb.
