You Can???t Always Trust a Conservatory Blinds Salesman Part III
Further to two recent articles (see Part I and Part II) where we highlighted some appalling examples of misleading sales tactics by certain companies, another arose last week. A customer in Bristol has ordered their conservatory blinds from another company, apparently because they had been completely misled. This particular company tells its salesmen to quote for oversized blinds because they are cheaper than individual blinds, despite this often being plain wrong as it will compromise the conservatory guarantee. In addition they suggest a thick “dim-out” fabric with highly reflective aluminium backing, claiming that it is exclusive to them and much better than any other. Not only is this factually incorrect but it risks damaging the conservatory structure because of extreme heat build-up, especially with solar glazing. Many conservatory roof manufacturers actually stipulate this in their literature. One more issue that was not explained was that their particular blind system (the same as our Standard Pleated Blinds) requires extra rails that need to be moved on complex shapes, making it awkward to operate and very ugly. The customer had no idea that this was the case and, as they have now placed their order with this other company, they will be very disappointed when they finally see their blinds. The problem (as always) is that the other company ended up offering a cheaper price using the incorrect layout and wholly inappropriate fabric and blinds for such complex shapes. The customer told us that they felt that they had bought a superior solution (which is clearly untrue) which left us in a position where we couldn’t really explain where they had been misled without appearing churlish. The salesmen didn't knowingly lie - he has simply been trained to believe what he is saying is true. It is a common problem that we encounter on a daily basis. Thankfully most customers tend to see the differences because we show actual blinds that are relevant to their particular conservatory so that people can draw their own conclusions.
