Gate Engineer Prosecuted for Unsafe Installation

An engineer at an automated gate company in Norwich has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison after fitting an unsafe gate that resulted in the death of a homeowner.

The engineer was convicted of manslaughter by gross negligence after an automatic gate he had installed fell on the owner of the house due to the lack of sufficient safety devices. This is the first time someone has received a prison sentence for installing an unsafe gate, and shows the dire consequences of an unsafe installation of any kind.

This is especially important in the blinds industry, where improperly fitted blinds can pose a life threatening risk to young children. A blind company was recently prosecuted simply for fitting unsafe blinds - if there had been a fatality as a result of this, it's very likely the ramifications for the staff of the blind company would have been much worse.

Of course the consequences for any company that fits an unsafe product is nothing compared to the tragedy of actually losing a life due to an unsafe installation, but these prosecutions serve as an important reminder that fitting any unsafe product has devastating consequences for all involved.

It's for reasons like this that we make sure all of our staff are kept up to date with their safety training; with annual health & safety reminder courses for all of our staff which includes information on the latest child safety requirements and regular sales and installation team meetings where any updates to the safety guidelines are discussed directly with our staff.
