What advice would you offer in designing a conservatory?

Apart from the obvious general suggestions regarding making the most of your aspect, ensuring a practical size and not skimping on the quality, we would suggest the following when considering conservatory blinds:

• Rectangular glazing will mean lower costs for your conservatory blinds
• Try and avoid an unnecessarily complex roof - you will be paying for it somewhere
• Glass roofs are much more practical than polycarbonate (plastic) roofs
• Solar glazing will not completely negate the need for blinds
• Avoid wide panes of glass - 700mm is an ideal width for glazing
• Avoid heavily tinted roofs as they change the colour of the light and can make it darker
• Timber rafters can twist making it harder to achieve a neat finish for recessed roof blinds
• Flimsy plastic "boss" and ridge mouldings cannot have blinds fitted to them
